The idea
What counts as a successful operation?
Surgical success is often expressed through familiar clinical measures. Recovery, however, is lived in movement, confidence, work, sport and the ordinary decisions a patient wants to make without thinking about their joint.
Professor Lee’s TEDxGrantham talk will explore how we count success in surgery and joint repair, and how a broader view of recovery could change the choices made before, during and after treatment.
The subject extends the preserve, repair, regenerate and replace framework that runs through his clinical, research and teaching work, but the TEDx stage creates a different brief: one idea, built for a general audience and grounded in the experience that begins when a patient leaves the operating theatre.
